For many, blogging is a hobby. For some others, it’s a passion. For some bloggers though, their blogs are their businesses. It might be hard to believe that a blog can turn into a business bringing in millions of dollars per year, but it is possible! Let me tell you a story about the man I married…
Scott started blogging back in 2005 about all things public relations and marketing, when blogging was barely even a thing. The name of the blog was Idea Grove and at the time, it was a hobby, a pastime.
You see, Scott was a journalist and loves storytelling. His blog posts were funny and engaging and he acquired quite a following. Back then, there were only a few bloggers on each category, so they supported each other fiercely, reading each others posts, commenting, linking to each other.
Scott became a thought leader or influencer in the communications space and he was able to get links back to his website from important web sources like Wikipedia, The Huffington Post, and others. These links, plus the engagement happening at the blog, let Google know this website must be important, too, so Google ranks it higher on search results pages, which means people can find it faster, and it gets more traffic or visits.
Scott was able to use that thought leadership or level of influence to sell his services as a marketing and PR consultant. Companies started to find Idea Grove whenever they searched for “Dallas PR Firm” or “Dallas Marketing Firm” and started to get in contact with him. Combine that with the fact that he was doing a great job as a consultant, delivering great results for his clients and you get to the best part of this story: growth.
Idea Grove was just Scott for the first 5 years, but in 2010 he partnered with a friend (he moved to China a year later, so couldn’t be with us for too long) and in 2011 they hired their first employee. I joined Idea Grove around that time, too, as a Search Engine Marketing Manager. My role was to help our clients with their SEO and online advertising needs. Shortly after, we hired our second and third employees and Idea Grove has been growing ever since.
The focus of the business is narrower now, helping only B2B technology companies with their public relations and digital marketing needs. The team we have working at Idea Grove now is incredibly talented and have won many awards for their work for our clients.
For 3 years, Idea Grove has been recognized by INC 5000 among the fastest growing companies in the United States. It has also been recognized by O’Dwyers as the top technology agency in Texas. We are also a HubSpot Platinum Partner.
We have been growing year after year and are hoping to close 2018 with a valuation of $2.8M and have plans to make over $3M next year, which is possible according to our growth rate. The agency is profitable and thriving.
It seems hard to believe that it all began as a blog. It takes talent and years of hard work and dedication, long days and nights, but it is well worthed!
Blogging has been glamourized these past years. It allows you the flexibility to work from home or anywhere, at any time that works best for you and you can make a lot of money doing something you are passionate about!
Anyone can be a blogger these days, but are you willing to put in the work to make it grow into a business?
